Nature often marks the changing seasons. Magpies start to swoop in spring, and when the koel, or st
orm bird as it is commonly known, arrives we know that the steamy summer months are here. The common koel is a large cucktoo that is heard much more then it is seen. The koel is known for its loud, repetitive call likened to an acceneing whistle 'cooee'. The males are stunning, with glossy black plumage tinged blue green with a striking red eye. The female is much duller, with brown and cream plumage. Koels are migratory and fly to australia every year to breed. They arrive from new guinea and south east asia in october, leaving again in march. During the breeding season they are found throughout northern and eastern australia. Koels eat fruit and insects. They feed almost entirely in the canopy of trees eating fruit such as figs straight from the branch.
